Criminal Paralegal for Wael and Sal
Languages Known: English, Arabic
Esma Shmeit is a criminal paralegal by day and a musician by night, bringing creativity, compassion, and purpose to everything she does. While pursuing a degree in the arts at the University of Alberta, Esma discovered an unexpected passion when she enrolled in criminology courses. What began as an academic interest quickly grew into a calling to work within the legal system and contribute to meaningful change.
Although music and criminal law may seem like two very different worlds, Esma believes they are driven by the same core values: using your voice to make a positive impact and helping people through some of the most challenging moments of their lives. Whether she is supporting clients in a legal setting or connecting with audiences through her music, her goal is the same; to leave people better than she found them.
Working in criminal law has deepened Esma’s understanding of the complexities behind every case and reinforced her belief that justice requires empathy as much as it requires advocacy.
“There is so much more to criminal law than the public sees. We do not live in an equal society, and it is not fair to look at things through one lens. Everyone deserves representation and a chance to make their life better.”
Esma is passionate about serving the public with integrity, compassion, and an open mind. She believes that every individual has a story worth hearing and deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their circumstances.
